Seventh cranial nerve paralysis, also known as facial paralysis, is a condition where one side of the face loses the ability to move due to damage to the facial nerve. Causes may include viral infections, middle ear inflammation, trauma, or other conditions affecting the nervous system.
When the seventh cranial nerve is damaged, the facial muscles cannot function normally, resulting in asymmetry and difficulty moving the mouth, closing the eyes, smiling, and other expressions. This condition not only impacts aesthetics but also affects facial functions, making daily activities challenging and leading to feelings of self-consciousness.
With over 20 years of experience in cosmetic surgery, Dr. Richard Huy has successfully treated numerous cases of complications following seventh cranial nerve paralysis. By applying advanced cosmetic surgical techniques, Dr. Richard Huy has helped many individuals regain balance and confidence in their facial appearance.
One notable case is Huyen Trang, a contestant from Season 6 of "Hành trình Lột xác," who experienced complications from seventh cranial nerve paralysis, resulting in facial asymmetry. The entire right side of her face lost mobility, with her right eye drooping and the left corner of her mouth being pulled upwards, leading to an uneven and unnatural smile.
After examining and consulting with the team, Dr. Richard Huy recommended that Huyen Trang undergo a surgical procedure to transfer the temporal muscle flap to restore balance to both sides of her face and to recover her ability to eat and speak. During the surgery, Dr. Richard Huy meticulously dissected the temporal muscle, removed excess bone from the muscle, and reshaped the nasolabial groove. The temporal muscle was transferred down to the corners of her mouth to lower the right corner while lifting the left corner, achieving facial symmetry.
"The process of transferring the muscle flap for Huyen Trang was quite complex due to the complications stemming from her childhood. Threading the muscle fibers into the left corner of Trang's mouth was relatively challenging; if not done carefully, it could cause the muscle flap to be easily visible. Therefore, we had to thread it into the inside of the lip and secure it to the lower jawline," Dr. Richard Huy shared.
After several hours of surgery, Dr. Richard Huy successfully grafted the muscles to the jawline and the corners of Huyen Trang's mouth, helping her face become more harmonious and balanced. The improvement in Trang's facial appearance was evident, with the mobility of her facial muscles returning to nearly normal. After addressing the complications from her facial nerve paralysis, Dr. Richard Huy and his team also made additional adjustments to some features on her face, including a rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, chin sliding, and fat grafting, to enhance her overall appearance.
Recently, the case of Vu Manh Hung, a boy who suffered a severe accident at just 5 years old, came to light. This accident had a significant impact on the motor functions of his face, causing him to live with facial paralysis from a young age. Hung's family tried every way to treat him, even traveling to China in hopes of helping him recover, but the results were still not positive.
After years of searching for hope, Hung's family was fortunate to learn about Dr. Richard Huy through the show "Hành trình Lột xác" and decided to place their trust on him. “Manh Hung has a rather complicated facial paralysis”, with one side of his facial muscles unable to move, resulting in a distorted and unnatural smile,” Dr. Richard Huy assessed.
With extensive experience successfully performing difficult and complex surgeries, Dr. Richard Huy devised a detailed plan to restore a natural face and a complete smile for Mạnh Hùng. He made a precise incision at the top of the head, hidden within the hairline, to cleverly conceal the scar. He then used the temporal muscle to lift the upper right corner of the mouth and lower the lower corner of the mouth, helping to create a more balanced smile for Hung.
After the surgery, Hung's face underwent a remarkable transformation. He was able to smile, speak, and move his facial muscles naturally. Manh Hung's family was extremely touched and grateful to Dr. Richard Huy when they saw their son being able to live a normal life like everyone else.
The sequelae of seventh nerve paralysis not only impact appearance but also create numerous challenges in daily life. However, with advancements in aesthetic medicine and the expertise of Dr. Richard Huy, these complications can be effectively addressed. This offers clients a chance to regain their confidence and brings renewed hope to those facing such conditions.
