Facial paralysis causes significant asymmetry, making communication and daily activities challenging for patients. Thanks to advancements in medical technology and Dr. Richard Huy's extensive expertise, he has successfully helped numerous patients overcome the effects of facial nerve damage, specifically from seventh cranial nerve paralysis, giving them a renewed and brighter life.
Facial nerve paralysis, commonly caused by damage to the seventh cranial nerve, results in one side of the face losing its ability to move. This imbalance not only affects facial aesthetics but also complicates basic daily functions, such as eating, speaking, and social interactions. Beyond the physical challenges, patients often struggle with psychological pressures, including self-consciousness and insecurity, which can significantly lower their quality of life. In cases of severe facial paralysis, cosmetic intervention typically improves 60-70% of the original condition.
To overcome the sequela caused by facial paralysis, Dr. Richard Huy often applies the technique of transferring the temporalis fascia flap. This method not only helps restore balance to both sides of the face but also significantly improves the function of chewing and speaking, giving the patient the opportunity to regain a natural smile.
One of the notable surgeries performed by Dr. Richard Huy was for Le Huyen Trang, a contestant on season 6 of the show “Hành Trình Lột Xác”. Born with congenital facial paralysis, Trang's face was noticeably asymmetrical. The entire right side of her face was nearly immobile, with her right eyelid drooping and the left corner of her mouth pulling upwards, making her smile appear distorted and unnatural.
After a thorough examination and consultation with his team, Dr. Richard Huy developed an optimal treatment plan for Huyền Trang, which involved temporalis muscle flap transfer surgery. Using advanced surgical techniques, Dr. Richard Huy carefully dissected the temporalis muscle fascia, removed excess bone, and skillfully reshaped the nasolabial fold. The temporalis muscle fascia was then transferred to the corner of Trang’s mouth, pulling down the right side and lifting the left corner, restoring facial symmetry. The surgery was a great success, with significant recovery of Trang’s facial muscles, allowing her to regain natural expressions and a bright smile.
Sharing about Huyền Trang's case, Dr. Richard Huy explained: “Her surgery was quite complex due to the facial paralysis she had since childhood. Moving and securing the temporalis muscle flap to the precise location required a high level of meticulousness. A particularly challenging aspect was threading the muscle fibers inside the lip to stretch the left corner of the mouth. If not done delicately, the muscle flap could become exposed or affect lip sensation. Thus, we were extremely cautious with each step to ensure the best aesthetic outcome for the patient.”
Recently, Dr. Richard Huy also took on the case of Vu Manh Hung, a young man who suffered facial paralysis due to an accident in childhood. Despite undergoing various treatments, the results have yet to meet his expectations.
With years of experience, Dr. Richard Huy quickly assessed the severity of Hùng's condition, stating, “This case requires high-level surgical techniques and precision down to the millimeter.”
Understanding the challenges the patient faces, Dr. Huy meticulously planned the treatment. Using a carefully concealed incision within the hairline, he accessed the necessary area for surgery. He then applied the temporalis muscle transfer technique to restore the symmetry of Hùng's face, skillfully tightening the drooping corner of the mouth and creating a harmonious, natural smile.
Like the cases of Huyen Trang and Manh Hung, Xuan Toan also turned to Dr. Richard Huy seeking a solution for his severe facial paralysis. Toàn’s condition was particularly challenging because his left eye could not close at all, severely affecting his vision. After a thorough consultation, Dr. Huy decided to apply the temporalis muscle transfer technique down to the nasolabial fold to correct this condition.
To achieve optimal treatment results, customers will be instructed in intensive physical therapy, which helps restore chewing function, facial movement and also brings a harmonious aesthetic appearance.
Facial reconstructive surgery after paralysis has brought new hope to those suffering from this condition. Thanks to the remarkable advancements in medical science and the skilled hands of Dr. Richard Huy, many patients have regained their confidence and significantly improved their quality of life.
