Doctor Richard Huy Restores the 'Missing' Nose for a Gen Z Girl

Lo Thi Le, a Gen Z girl from Sơn La, has faced a condition where her nose has nearly 'disappeared' for 20 years due to severe necrosis. With perseverance and a determination to change her appearance, she was accepted by Dr. Richard Huy, who performed a nose reconstruction.

Recently, Dr. Richard Huy, the Medical Director of Kangnam Cosmetic Hospital and Head of the Transformation Journey team, took on the special case of Lò Thị Lệ, a Gen Z girl (born in 2001) who suffered from complete necrosis of the nasal area, resulting in deformity of the nasal tissue and severe contracture scars, makes her face look unattractive and unaesthetic

Dr. Richard Huy assessed, “This is a severe defect in the nasal region, and the deformation is very difficult to correct, as the entire structure of the nasal tip, nasal ala, and nasal septum is no longer present. There are significant contracture scars, and there may still be areas of inflammation and swelling inside.”

The Near 'Disappearance' of Lo Thi Le’s Nose

To reconstruct Le's nasal structure, Dr. Richard Huy planned to apply various techniques, including synchronizing the nasal structural framework and using autologous skin flaps to cover both the internal and external mucosal surfaces of the nose, aiming to restore her nose to a normal appearance.

“The process of restoring Lệ's nose will require multiple stages, demanding absolute precision to reconstruct the nasal shape and ensure that Le can breathe easily after the treatment is completed’’ Dr. Richard Huy stated.

The process of reconstructing Le's 'missing' nose was filled with challenges. 

The surgical procedure for Lo Thi Le underwent five stages:

Stage 1: Placing a Skin Expansion Bag and Reshaping the Scar

Due to extensive scarring in the surrounding nasal structures, it was nearly impossible to use local skin flaps. Dr. Richard Huy and his team had to use distant skin flaps to cover the defect in the nasal area. 'The process of placing the skin expansion bag on the forehead faced many difficulties during the injection of water, as we had to treat infections with antibiotics before continuing to inject water into the expansion bag,' Dr. Richard Huy shared.

Stage 2: Transferring the Flap and Reshaping the Nose

Due to the significant deficiency of soft tissue in the nose, Dr. Richard Huy and his team decided to use rib cartilage to reconstruct the entire structure of the nasal tip, nasal alas, and nasal septum, while also transferring a skin flap for reshaping the nose. This process required high skill and meticulousness from the doctor

Stage 3: Thinning the Nose Flap + Elevating the Nasal Tip with Ear Cartilage + Fat Grafting

In this stage, the doctors focused on thinning the reshaped nose flap to elevate the structure of the nasal tip. Dr. Richard Huy used ear cartilage to create a softer and more natural-looking nasal tip. Additionally, to restore softness to the nasal area, he performed Nanofat grafting to regenerate soft tissue and fill in the deficient areas.

Stage 4: Correcting Contracture Deformities and Thinning the Flap Again

With the presence of severe contracture deformities, Dr. Richard Huy adjusted the nose while also thinning the nose flap a second time to correct abnormalities and create uniformity in the nasal shape.

Stage 5: Cutting the Nasal Pedicle, Thinning the Flap a Third Time, and Finalizing

Dr. Richard Huy proceeded to cut the nasal pedicle to refine the shape of the nose and performed the third thinning of the nose flap. These steps helped complete the surgical results, ensuring the nose had a natural and balanced appearance.

After enduring these challenging surgeries, Lo Thi Le achieved a completed nasal shape that harmonizes with her face. She expressed immense gratitude for the dedication and compassion of Dr. Richard Huy, which helped her overcome this challenge and attain a normal appearance."
